10 REASONS TO DO YOGA
1. Stress reduction. By fostering relaxation, yoga reduces stress hormones, blood pressure, heart rate, and symptoms of anxiety, depression, fatigue, asthma, and insomnia.
2. Pain relief. Studies show that yoga reduces pain among people with cancer, multiple sclerosis, autoimmune diseases, hypertension, arthritis, and other chronic conditions. Some practitioners report yoga reduces even emotional pain.
3. Better breathing. Through slower, deeper breathing, yoga helps improve lung function, triggers the body’s relaxation response, and increases the amount of oxygen in the body.
4. Flexibility. Yoga improves flexibility and mobility, increases range of movement, and reduces joint aches and pains. It also helps improve body alignment, resulting in better posture and reduction in back, neck, joint, and muscle problems.
5. Increased strength. Yoga uses both big and small muscle groups, which increases strength from head to toe. Yoga’s weight-bearing poses also help build bone density.
6. Weight management. Yoga can aid weight control by reducing stress hormones in the bloodstream, burning calories, and creating muscle mass. Yoga also provides a heightened sense of well-being, which can lead to greater body awareness and healthier eating habits.
7. Improved circulation. Combining poses into flows helps improve circulation and movement of oxygenated blood to cells, and helps flush organs and detoxify the body.
8. Cardiovascular conditioning. Even gentle yoga practice provides cardiovascular benefits by lowering the resting heart rate, increasing endurance, and improving oxygen uptake.
9. Sharper mind. Yoga focuses on the present, which opens the way to improved concentration, coordination, reaction time, and memory. Research shows that such mindfulness practices can actually create new neural pathways in the brain.
10. Inner Peace. Yoga practitioners feel calmer and more centered. This sense of peace is what many practitioners say keeps them coming back to the mat.
